guilty pleasures (2)
fara | 3/21/2006 | 6:04 ammy guess is yesterday’s lunch is the most expensive i’ve been to – i don’t do expensive food unless it’s for special occassions – reunions, anniversaries, the likes. good thing is mr amex yang blanja. and not mine. nyehnyeh.
to m.e.s.b. – thanks for the treat.
i normally shy away from food that’s not fried, grilled, baked, boiled (basically every possible cooking method that either adds fat, kills the nutritional value or basically very indulgent) – sushi and the likes was listed as ones i would avoid.
anywho, a few forays into the conveyor-belt-dining experience (genki sushi was introduced to me by ash), i get me an offer to dine at a posh restaurant just next door to my office. only dumb people would turn down the offer, no?
so wasabi bistro was visited upon by 4 talkative ladies + one overwhelmed guy. it’s been awhile since we met up for lunch so it goes without saying that our group was quite noisy in the supposedly intimate bistro setup.
we had sashimi + sushi for appetizers, the tempura + teriyaki set for main and *drum roll* durian pancake as dessert.
Â
sashimi – whilst the rest of us tried out the fish + squid, ash only took the lemon (??!). no fair! quite an interesting affair – raw seafood, that is -Â though would be a ‘jarang-jarang’ kind of experience for me as i can’t think past the fact that it’s raw. discerning food connoisseur i will never be.
tempura – we had seafood tempura – my first tempura dish, actually. pretty ok – reminded me of the sotong/udang goreng you’d order at the local mamak outlet – the accompanying dipping sauce was bland so used the wasabi + soy sauce combo instead for dipping.
teriyaki – this one i a bit pissed at the bistro – remember specifically ordering chicken teriyaki. when the main dish arrived – appeared similar to ash’s (she ordered chicken too) but when i popped a piece in, it was beef!
good for ‘em i don’t hv any violent objections against eating beef – just proceeded to blasah the food. but if i was on a no-beef diet, well – they’d hv gotten an earful from me for messing up my order. malas la nak reconfirm when the waitress placed the order – i expected more from establishments like this.
the grand finale – durian pancake! *drools*
now, this.. this is what i call music .. ehh indulgence. a self-professed durian lover, i rarely take durian in other than it’s naturale form. at most, i’d tolerate your odd durian porridge. however, durian pancake from lai po heen is delectable. priced at god-knows how much – among the 4 of us, we managed to down 9 pieces of this dessert – even after complaining that we were full.
all in all, good food +Â good company = a happy ly-d/fara
will definitely have to do that again – the good company part aa.. good food must be done sparingly since we’re no longer the young’uns with very high metabolisme that we used to be

yummy durian cakes… craving craving
