the quest for more space
fara | 12/7/2004 | 4:15 pmi have been tinkering quite a bit with my latest gadget. and discovered that i am fast losing the battle for space.
rewind a bit.
i have been wanting get myself a PDA for quite some time but did not relish the idea of having to carry two devices around (i.e. mobile phone and PDA). add to that the fact that i did not and would not – up to last two weeks that is – subject myself to carry a handbag and my notorious absent-mindedness so it’s a hybrid of the two that i must acquire – the smartphone.
From Wikipedia:
A smartphone is generally considered any handheld device that integrates personal information management and mobile phone capabilities in the same device. Often, this includes adding phone functions to already capable PDAs or putting “smart” capabilities, such as PDA functions, into a mobile phone. The key feature of a smartphone is that one can install additional applications to the device. The applications can be developed by the manufacturer of the handheld device, by the operator or by any other 3rd party software developer
a quick survey (both in print and electronic media) revealed the average price tag attached to this category of device would cause mama to gasp ‘you spent how much on that phone?!’ – i actually discarded the idea – well, at least till the prices starts to go down a bit.
but as you would have it, amir decided that this shouldn’t be a determining factor so he went and got me the nokia 6260
i have since codenamed it stitch-0 in honour of experiment 626 (disney movie afficiandos would see the relation), rung up quite an amount on my gprs bill and am now fully immersed in my latest pet project – which is to install and test as many applications as i can.
googled for symbian software and found quite a number of (seemingly) reputable portals/sites to these softwares (my current favourites are this, this and this)
most of the free downloads would always trigger an alert in stitch-0 as it rarely has any digital certs attached to it but after the first few tries, the heart palpitations that i get on getting those alerts have receded.
i am now officially eBook-crazy. reading has always been my favourite pastime since i was a wee lass. i’ve lost some of the fervour due to my new passion. having access to these books minus the hassle of carrying the bulky tomes resulted in a downloading frenzy unmatched by any other.
hence we come to the case where i need more storage. ebooks generally do not exceed the 1mb mark, but i am at the point where i can not sync anymore ebooks from my notebook.
amir did highlight my possible need for extra storage when we first got stitch-0 but i was quite sure i wouldn’t need it. don’t employ me as your soothsayer .
so here i am, browing for more information on rs-mmc and discovered that you don’t have that many links to sites in malaysia. but these two caught my eye for gauging the market price:
will need amir to do additional scouting at low yat and imbi later.

[...] s like if i don’t use the dongle for a few days, then establishing a connection with stitch-0 would prove to be such a chore. i don’t know whether [...]
[...] all this while, i would be running around carrying my wallet (not purse, aye!) and handphone in my hand. which explains why most of my older handphones are small in size. but then amir got me stitch-0 – and due to my previous run-in with pickpockets and the lot – amir thought it appropriate that i start to wise up and get me a handbag.
